News Archive | Design Exhibition The Design and Technology Department came up trumps, yet again, with a wonderful display of A Level work by students taking A2 and AS Design. There was also a selection of work by GCSE candidates in Textiles, Graphics, Resistant Materials, Construction and our CBE Diploma. Awards were given by Vinci plc, Stowmarket Rotary Club, Bennett Homes, Suffolk County Council, John Skinner and our Headteacher Mr Penn.
Tunstall Forest A group of the school’s pupils were lucky enough to enjoy the experience of going back in time at a Heritage site run by SCC Outreach activities dept. Given a group challenge on the day to build prehistoric shelters – they needed to light a fire and use axes and knives properly to be able to create utensils for eating & building. Having their meals prepared in an authentic roman way in a roman kitchen, they were able to do away with 20thcentury tools & implements of our day – to enjoy going back to the old days. Having a great day’s weather was a bonus – but everybody in all of the groups pulled their weight and were a credit to the school. .
Angel Visits SHS A group of students at Stowmarket High School recently had a visit from a distinctive character to aid their learning – Angel, the duck. Angel is the five year old pet of Y9 student Eden Rednall whose family rescued Angel when he was a duckling. Eden brought Angel into his science class. The brief visit helped his group look at the bone structure of the bird – a topic the class have been covering in Biology. .
Barcelona Trip Mr West organised a football tour to Barcelona in the Easter holidays. A great time was had by all which included sight seeing trips, a visit to a theme park which houses Euorope's fastest roller coaster and lots of football training and matches. Matches were won and lost with a variety of scorers from both the girls' and boys' teams. The group are pictured right in Barcelona's Nou Camp Stadium.
| Funny For Money Stowmarket High School loves to get involved in Charity Fund Raising days and Comic relief is one of our favourite opportunities to raise cash for good causes. Mrs Green and her team of Student Leaders organised a whole host of events during the day. There was a staff v’s student volleyball match (the staff won … of course), a fabulous cake sale, sponsored silences, pupils being tied together for the day, quizzes and assemblies throughout the week with a fab finale event on Friday lunchtime—Staff Karaoke! Pupils were all asked to donate £1 where possible to access non school uniform for the day. In total we raised over £1000. Well done to everyone who did their bit! . | | |
| Italy Trip A group of 6th form students journeyed to Italy to see exciting historical landmarks and travel the country’s most famous cities. The group started in Montecatini, from which medieval towns Lucca, Pisa and Florence were an hour’s bus ride away. They got the opportunity to climb the Duomo in Florence and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, where students could conquer their fear of heights and see Italy from a new angle. Then it was off to Siena – another spectacular medieval town – en route to the capital, Rome, where the group spent three days touring the city’s most famous sights such as the Colosseum, the Vatican and the ancient Roman Forum. “This was one of the best school trips I have ever been on,” said Ryan Duce. “The amount of history crammed into these little towns was incredible and the trip allowed us to see most of Rome, one of the most historical cities in Europe.” | | |
Team Maths Challenge Four of our most able Year 10 mathematicians contested the Team Mathematics challenge at Kesgrave High School. Leon Visits Again Leon Baptiste once again inspired our students during a recent trip. Pupils from the school were selected to attend a Q and A session and a physical workshop with him. Leon introduced the six keys to success which have been developed in partnership with the British Athletes Commission (mental toughness; hunger to achieve; people skills; sports and life knowledge; breaking barriers; planning for success). Leon’s greatest achievement was winning gold in the 200m at the Commonwealth Games 2010, claiming England’s first Commonwealth sprint gold since 1998. Injury shattered his Olympic dreams of representing Team GB at London 2012.

The day was split into short workshops which covered, among many others, essential skills such as team building, communication, cooperation, presenting and preparing bids.
Badminton Team Excel Having won the Western Area tournament in December the Stowmarket High School girls U16 badminton team went to Suffolk One to represent the Western area in the County final. The team felt daunted at the task of playing the opposition mainly due to the fact that they were a year younger than the vast majority of the other teams. Despite this the girls won their group finishing above Northgate, County Upper and Bungay. This resulted in progression to the final where they unfortunately lost out to Sir John Leman. This was a great achievement for the girls, way beyond their expectations. They will all still be eligible for this competition next year and will be hoping to go one better.

Bravery Award for Rhys Y11 student Rhys Joseland has received a police bravery award for rescuing a woman who was being attacked in her home. He was walking to school when he heard a girl screaming for help. Rhys ran into the home and came across a man who was assaulting a woman. “Her daughter was shouting ‘can you help please’,” Rhys said. “I was in shock, I did not know what to do, so I ran over and I went for it. He was on the floor, behind her, with his hands around her neck and I got him away. I told him to stop it and to let go and he did. I took her downstairs. Everyone was crying – her daughter was crying and her mother was crying as well. She was shocked and worried, and she could not really understand what was going on.” Chief Constable Simon Ash praised his actions, saying: “Rhys was presented with a certificate of appreciation in recognition of his heroic and brave actions. Without his actions the woman could well have been subject to further assault and more severe injury.”
Theatre Royal Visit On November 12th, three year 13 A level English students visited the Theatre Royal at Bury St. Edmunds for an evening performance of the stand-up comedian Shappi Khorsandi as part of their spoken language course work. Khorsandi is a noted female comedian of Iranian origin who has appeared in many BBC Radio 4 programmes, such as Just A Minute, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow as well as BBC TV’s Have I got News for You and QI. Known for her satirical and observational comedy, the show was irreverent and in places “laugh out loud” hilarious! Not only did the students immensely enjoy her original routines, but they gleaned many linguistic techniques for their “A” level course work.
'Movember' During the course of Movember over 20 male staff from Stowmarket High School took the plunge and decided to commit to growing a moustache for the month of November and in doing so, raise awareness and funds for men's health including prostate and testicular cancer. They have raised £1,105 for their efforts – a tremendous achievement. Organiser Andrew Kirk gave a sincere thank you to all staff who have supported the campaign by growing (or in some cases ‘attempting’ to grow!) a moustache or donating to Movember. He said ‘it’s been great to see so many staff participating to support such a worthwhile cause. It was excellent also to see students supporting the cause by donning their own makeshift tashes on our ‘Movember’ non-school uniform day’. All the total proceeds will go to the charity to help it continue it’s funding of cancer research programmes.
