The Programme -

Every term for one day we collapse our school timetable and learn in a completely different way to the curriculum offered in normal lessons. Students choose from a wide range of activities and work in vertical year groups Yr9 – Yr 13 for a whole day. This allows us to broaden and deepen our curriculum and challenge students to become more responsible for their own learning journey.

We encourage our students to make informed choices about how to make use of these days so that they themselves, and their community, whilst having fun at the same time. Students are expected to attend all of these days as it is a valued part of the curriculum. We believe these days challenge students to experience deeper learning, make informed choices about their future, and build skills that employers are looking for.

‘My day was the best day ever!! It would be brilliant if we could do it more times so I can get even better at the game. Also I found the day was very relaxing and I met some really nice Year 10 and 11 students who I had never spoke to before who were part of my team’ - Ashley Y9

Themes -

Extend your learning: A chance for students to explore in depth a subject they love for a whole day, e.g. visits to art galleries, science museums, theatres, writing articles for a historical magazine, creating science videos, code-breaking, dance workshops, creating a fashion show etc.

Explore your future: An opportunity to become familiar with a range of vocational courses and/or careers available locally, e.g. hair and beauty taster days, car maintenance workshop, college taster days, university taster days, police work, jewellery making, photography etc.

Expand your skills: A range of activities which have been designed to enable students to practise the skills of applying learning to real world contexts, e.g. leadership training and experience, work experience, promoting a band, volunteering and community work, organising events etc.

Extra-curricular: A large variety of activities to ‘challenge yourself’ to do something different. The content of the summer term Flexi-Day is focussed on a wide range of summer activities, from archery, wakeboarding, indoor skydiving, to gaming challenges. Many of our staff offer an activity which is of personal interest to them.

‘I learned something about what the RAF do on a daily basis, how important trust is when you work in a stressful job and that it is so important to work in team if you want to succeed in life’ Nathan Y9

Feedback -

From the feedback we have received, our Flexi-Day programme this year has been judged a success by the vast majority of students and staff. There will be over 80 activities on offer over the three days, so there is a real opportunity for students to benefit from activities which are tailored to their needs.

In September, your child will be issued with a preference form which will show the choices for the Autumn Term and the Spring Term days. A booklet with all the choices will be available on the school website. It contains a brief description, times, clothing, and cost of each activity.

‘Flexiday was a fun day but also quite important for my future as I now know how to apply for college and apprenticeships’ – Oliver Y11
